Willy Fleckhaus (1925-1983) was called ‘Germany’s most expensive pencil’ and ‘Germany’s first art director’. He shaped the visual culture of the still young Federal Republic of Germany in the 60s, 70s and 80s like no other. He became internationally recognised for his groundbreaking design of the magazine twen, which influenced several generations with its content concept, generous design, modern typography and photography. Fleckhaus worked with important photographers of his time such as Will McBride, Hans Feurer, Charlotte March, Guido Mangold and Reinhart Wolf. In addition to his work for twen, he also developed layout concepts for the illustrated magazine Quick or the supplement of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (from 1980), book series such as the edition suhrkamp in the colours of the rainbow or the paperbacks of Insel Verlag.
