The bed was designed with the advice of Professor Zerbi, a well-known orthopaedist with whom Castiglioni had already collaborated on a hospital bed. The task here is to create an innovative system that can provide different sizes without interfering with the structure. The project wants to maximise the ventilation of the mattress-support system and minimise the transverse hammock effect. For this reason, the longitudinal bars were chosen thin and the materials were made of advanced composites.
The resting surface becomes a set of rectangular-section fibreglass rods with soft, transparent PVC ends, arranged like the extension of the body. Without a perimeter frame, the length of the beams and the relative number of bars can be varied at will, thus leaving great freedom in terms of dimensions. The whole is connected to a U-shaped frame that is flexible enough to stretch the shirt-like coverings of the two heads, formed by a rough sackcloth that can in turn be covered with removable fabrics in the desired colours.
