Metal workshop, Bauhaus Dessau, 1927-29.

The workshop wing of the building was acclaimed for its innovative use of a structural concrete frame, which freed the exterior walls from any load-bearing function and allowed for the spectacular glass curtain wall. Frequently photographed from the exterior, this shot shows a less familiar view from the interior, where the massive supportive pillars are visible within the airy light-filled workspace. Hanging ceiling lamps were designed by Marianne Brandt and Hans Pryrembel (Me 105a). Photograph: Marianne Brandt. Bauhaus Archiv, Berlin.
