‘Briefkasten für das Haus Bahr’: The austrian art nouveau artist Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867-1908) was also a designer of everyday objects, as this interesting mailbox shows. Source: Leopold Museum

The playwright and critic Hermann Bahr (1863–1934) commissioned J. M. Olbrich to build a villa for himself and his wife, modelled on a traditional South German farmhouse.

“And do you remember how we stood on the hill in St. Veit last year? It was autumn, and you were marking out the site for my house. Far below, the town lay shrouded in steam and mist, with the sound of gardens rustling all around us. Here, everything is pure and free. (…) And I can still hear you today, saying in your firm and cheerful voice: ‘Style! English! Secession! What silly words! Everyone should do what they feel, how they feel – time will tell what they are worth!’‘ (Hermann Bahr in ’Secession”. p. VII) Source
