One day after students in Paris occupied the Sorbonne University and proclaimed the so-called May 68, the exhibition “50 Years of Bauhaus” was opened by the “Württembergischer Kunstverein”.
Designed by Herbert Bayer, it was shown in eight other museums worldwide until 1971 and is still considered as one of the most important post-war exhibitions on Bauhaus. It was of the utmost cultural and political importance for the still young Federal Republic of Germany, as it was also about rehabilitating the German cultural nation on an international level.

The opening of the exhibition was accompanied by protests against the planned closure of the Ulm School of Design (hfg Hochschule für Gestaltung UIm), which had been founded in 1953 as the successor to the Bauhaus.
